Seeking the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
A Practical Guide for Believers
-
A distinct experience from salvation. At salvation, the Spirit indwells every believer; in Spirit baptism, He empowers for boldness, mission, and intimacy with Christ.
It is a gift from Jesus, promised to every believer (Acts 1:4–5, 8).
Our Assemblies of God belief: speaking in tongues is the initial physical evidence.
Initial means it is the first outward sign.
Not immediate: there can be a delay; God gives the ability to speak in tongues, but it may not manifest instantly.
-
Without the Spirit’s fullness, Christianity can feel incomplete—faithful but dry, forgiven but powerless.
The Spirit brings:
Boldness for witness (Acts 1:8)
Deeper intimacy with Jesus (John 16:14)
Freedom from fear, shame, and exhaustion
Fruit and gifts for daily life (Galatians 5:22–23; 1 Corinthians 12)
-
It’s real and biblical. Sometimes human languages (Acts 2), sometimes heavenly language (1 Cor. 14).
It’s a gift. Not the only gift, but the initial outward evidence of Spirit baptism.
It glorifies God and builds up the believer. With interpretation, it also strengthens the church.
-
Come to Jesus first – Trust Him fully; salvation is the foundation.
Ask with hunger – Pray in faith (Luke 11:13).
Surrender fully – Yield control, renounce self-reliance.
Welcome His presence – Don’t force an experience; receive by faith.
Allow laying on of hands – Biblical agreement and prayer (Acts 19:6).
Expect transformation – Look for boldness, new intimacy, and fruit.
-
Some may sense strong emotion, others quiet peace.
Some may feel boldness rise or receive spiritual gifts (1 Corinthians 14).
Many simply know: “Jesus is near, fear is gone, love is burning.”
However it comes, the Spirit’s goal is always to glorify Jesus.
-
“Father, I come in Jesus’ name. Thank You for saving me by grace through faith. I surrender every part of my life. I ask now—baptize me with your Holy Spirit. Clothe me with power to be Your witness. Produce Your fruit in me. Give me courage, love for Your Word, and compassion for people. I receive by faith. Thank You for Your presence. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
